What I Believe
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.” Romans 1:16, ASV
I made a promise to God a few years ago that I would live out my testimony through my actions, my standards, and my love. However, sometimes we need some words behind those actions, so to clarify who I am and what I believe, here is my personal statement of faith.
I don’t write this to start a debate or to force my beliefs on anyone. This is just a summary of who I am. These are my non-negotiables: the truths that I believe with total certainty, and will accept nothing to the contrary.
I do believe in respecting other’s beliefs. I pray that God reveals Himself and His absolute truth to each one of my friends and family, and will trust Him to do just that. I believe that I am called to live out my beliefs in love, not to force other people to adopt those same beliefs.
#1: I believe that God Almighty is the one and only True God. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, completely holy and unerring, omnipresent, and uncreated. He has always been, is, and always will be. There is none more powerful than Him! He is the creator of everything, and without Him, there is nothing. It is to Him and Him alone that I owe my worship, and I am commanded to worship none other.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1, NIV
“The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.” Psalm 103:19, NIV
“Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'” Luke 4:8, NIV
(There are thousands more verses in the Bible proving God’s sovereignty. Go and look ’em up.)
#2: I believe all men are fallen and sinful by default, and we can never reach God’s standards on our own power. Mankind fell in the garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve gave in to the temptation of Satan, and ate from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, though God had told them not to.
“…for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” Romans 3:23, NIV
“As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one’…” Romans 3:10, NIV
#3: I believe that Jesus Christ is the perfect son of God, born to a virgin through miraculous conception. He lived a sinless life, died on the cross, taking all of our sins upon himself, and after three days, was resurrected through the power of the Holy Spirit. I believe that Jesus Christ is the only way to God – the only means of salvation.
If we do not accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of our lives, the consequence is spending eternity in hell, also known as the lake of fire, which was originally prepared for Satan and his dark angels. However, if we have accepted Jesus Christ, our reward is eternity with God in heaven.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:1, NIV
“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6, NIV
“If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:15, NIV
#4: I believe that the Bible is God’s perfect and complete word, and the final authority on truth. It was inspired and written through the Holy Spirit, who ensured that it was written accurately and completely, without error or omission. I will often refer back to the original Greek and Hebrew, which I believe is the perfect form of the Bible. Other translations have occasional errors introduced by man, and as such, referencing the original Hebrew and Greek is the best way to understand the meaning of the Word (although use of most translations is fine for everyday purposes.)
“But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned!” Galatians 1:8, NIV
“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this scroll: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to that person the plagues described in this scroll. And if anyone takes words away from this scroll of prophecy, God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life and in the Holy City, which are described in this scroll.” Revelation 22:18-19, NIV
#5: I believe in the Holy Spirit, and that God can and does perform miracles, give revelation through word of knowledge and wisdom, dreams, visions, and visitations. These acts are performed through the Holy Spirit, which lives inside all those who believe and trust in in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I also believe that the Holy Spirit does not always move in the same exact way in each person, but that everything said and done by the Holy Spirit will always line up with the Word of God.
“I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:49, NIV
“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.” Joel 2:28, NIV
#6: I believe in the Trinity, that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are three persons, but are one with each other. While the Bible does not expressly mention the trinity, a study of the scriptures proves this point.
#7: While we are not saved by works, and our sins are forgiven by Christ, I believe that we are called to live a holy life, and to not conform to the world, but to keep ourselves from sin.
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2, NIV
“…for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.'” 1 Peter 1:16, NIV
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?” Romans 6:1-2, NIV
That, in a nutshell, is what I believe, without condition or apology. Again, I believe that I am called to live out my beliefs in love, not to force other people to adopt those same beliefs.
I have a number of other points of faith which I will not go into here, but I know that no one will ever be 100% accurate, theologically, so I hold to the other points with humility, and I will change them if the Lord reveals a flaw in my beliefs through the Word of God.
I have dedicated myself to living out these statements of faith, no matter what. In pursuit of #7, I find the epistles, especially the books of Romans (especially chapter 12), James, 1 and 2 Timothy, and Jude to be most helpful. I highly recommend digging into the Bible, especially these five books. They are chock-full of good stuff!
